# Fishing, an inexpensive hobby
Fishing is something that is always of an interest to a lot of people. It is a fun hobby that is also relatively easy to do and rather inexpensive. Clearly, this made it the perfect pastime for someone who refuses to spend a lot on a hobby. It is a leisure that people can do to kill time and means of providing something to free the mind and body from the worries of the day.
Sport fishing, where fishing itself quite a vast topic, is now fast becoming a popular hobby in the country. We are bound to bump into people fishing at just about anywhere we go. Not only has this become a pastime for friends and buddies, but interestingly enough for families too. With the abundance and varieties of fishes available, where on good days some anglers could hit the jackpot and catch the likes of Red Carp, Snapper, as well as the locally known Umpak and many other, it adds more attraction to the enthusiastic and also the would-be anglers.
In the Brunei Muara district alone, there is countless number of places for people to go fishing. The most well known, and perhaps considered to be one of the oldest, has to be the one located in the heart of the capital city Bandar Seri Begawan, is the Kianggeh river bank along the Brunei river.
One of the places, which is also getting more and more famous among the fishing enthusiasts in the country is Kg Sungai Matan. Located along Jalan Kota Batu, and barely 10 minutes drive from the capital Bandar Seri Begawan, the place today has become a favourite fishing spot for many local anglers.
Almost every night, a number of people will line up the concrete stilt bridge trying their luck to get the best catch. Many can be seen enjoying themselves and having some great times with friends especially on weekend and public holidays where the number increases. As the best part of fishing was that it was a chance to enjoy the outdoors, lots of people can be seen coming here with families too. Apart from fishing, they can also be seen just killing time with each other.
Fishing in this picturesque kampong is also made famous by the residents in the village where fishing competitions have been held a number of times. The activity was organised in line with the Kenali Negara Kitani (Get to know your country) campaign organised by the Brunei Tourism at the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources. This competition has now become an annual event in the Kampung and this eventful occasion, which usually starts early in the morning, easily attracted many, if not hundreds of, fishing enthusiasts that includes not only residents and former residents in the Kampong but also those from many parts of the country.
